Add another city to the list of those that are helping to eliminate the waste of plastic bags that are just dumped in the landfills. Does anyone old enough to remember know how we possible could have gotten along without these things thirty years ago?
From the Pacific Business News-
"Maui County is banning plastic shopping bags.
Over the objections of businesses, the Maui County Council on Friday passed Hawaii's first municipal ban on plastic shopping bags. The law takes effect in January 2011 to give stores time to get rid of the plastic bags and get new reusable cloth bags or recyclable paper bags.
The Retail Merchants of Hawaii opposed the measure, saying it would lead to hassles and higher costs for consumers and store owners.
Not just any old paper bag will do on Maui. The new law requires bags to be 100 percent recyclable and be labeled "reusable" and "recyclable" on the outside of the bag.
San Francisco and Los Angeles have banned plastic shopping bags and Seattle is considering a 20-cent charge to consumers who want to use a plastic bag. Other cities are considering bans because of the cost of cleaning up flyaway plastic bags in streets and landfills."
