International Artexpo New York is an annual art fair that gives buyers an opportunity to purchase directly from artists across the globe. While it usually comes across as a "commercial" event, I thought it worth a mention because of their new "Global Green Artist Challenge". Artexpo is billing the challenge as "a call to action for artists to utilize art for the improvement of the planet through creating work with environmental themes, using eco-conscious materials, and maintaining safe earth friendly practices in their daily lives". They've joined with well-known seascape artist Wyland, and have promised to deliver several green events with exhibiting artists and the community to raise awareness of environmental issues in the art world.

Artexpo has also invited twenty NYC public schools to take part in an environmental mural painting contest. Each school has been asked to paint the natural world as they see it, which can include any environmental subject such as animals, parks, lakes, and oceans. The winning class will be announced in early February and will participate in a live mural painting with Wyland at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 27. Then, on February 28th, Wyland and actress/painter Jane Seymour will host a free aquatic mural painting event for New York City area children.
